Stars in Their Eyes
The Scientific American Book of the Cosmos edited by David Levy, Macmillan, £20, ISBN0333782933
Previous generations of scientists would have killed to know what we know. For the first timein history, we have a pretty good idea of the material content of the Universe, our position within
it and how the whole thing came into being.
In these times of exploding knowledge there is a definite need to take stock and assemble
what we know in a palatable (受欢迎的) form. __________ (46)
The essays in The Scientific American Book of the Cosmos have been selected by David Levy,co-discoverer of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which in 1994 struck Jupiter with the violence of sev-eral full-scale nuclear wars. __________ (47) This is certainly a great collection of essays, but it isnot, as the book promises, a seamless ( 完美的,无缝隙的) synthesis of our current knowledge.
Nobody can fault the range of articles Levy has included. There are essays on the planets, moons and assorted debris (碎片 ) in the Solar System, and on our Galaxy, the Milky Way.__________ (48)
The contributors, too, are stars in their own fields. Not many books can boast chapters writ-ten by such giants as Erwin Schrodinger and Francis Crick. My personal favorites are a piercinglyclear essay by Albert Einstein on general relativity and an article by Alan Guth and Paul Stein-hardt on the inflationary, (膨胀的) Universe.
So much for the book's content. But Levy has not succeeded in providing an accurate synthe-sis of our current knowledge of the cosmos, which the book jacket promises. Gathering together
previously published articles inevitably leaves subject gaps, missing explanations and so on.____(49) But there isn't one. In fact, surprisingly for a book so densely packed with infor-
mation, there is no index.
Collecting essays in this way is clearly a good publishing wheeze (巧妙的主意). But this approach shortchanges the public, who would be better served by an account moulded into a seamless whole. ____(50) However, for the next edition, please, please can we have anindex?
A.Tegmark fears he may hold the record for the longest time taken to read one book.
B.In a more positive vein, this is a wonderful collection of essays to dip in and out of if youalready have a good overview (概述) of current cosmic understanding.
C.Levy is an active astronomer and an accomplished writer, so you'd expect him to providea broad and accurate picture of our current understanding of the cosmos.
D.Scientific American has attempted to eater to this need by bringing together essays thathave appeared in the magazine.
E To some extent, these could have been plugged with a glossary (词表) of terms.
F Also included are contributions on the world of subatomic particles, the origin of life onthe Earth and the possibility of its existence elsewhere.

4、回答题:
Congratulations, It Will Be A Boy!
Until just a few years ago, making a baby boy or a girl was pretty much a hit-or-miss affair.
Not anymore. Parents who have access to the latest genetic testing techniques can now predeter-Mine their baby's sex with great accuracy, as Monique and Scott Collins learned to their delight two years ago, when their long-wished-for daughter Jessica was born after genetic prescreening( 基因筛选).
And baby Jessica is just the beginning. Within a decade or two, it may be possible to screen kids almost before conception (怀孕) for an enormous range of attributes (特性) , such as how tall they are likely to be, what body type they will have, their hair and eye color, what sort of illness they will be naturally resistant to, and even, conceivably(可想见地) , their IQ and person-ality type.
In fact, if gene therapy lives up to its promise, parents may someday be able to go beyond weeding out(筛选) undesirable traits and start actually inserting the genes they want perhaps even genes that have been crafted(创造) in a lab. Before the new millennium is many years old, parents may be going to fertility clinics(生殖诊所) and picking from a list of options the way car buyers order air conditioning and chrome alloy(铬合金) wheels. "It is the ultimate shopping ex-perience: designing your baby," says biotechnology critic Jeremy Rifkin, who is appalled by the prospect. "But in a society used to cosmetic surgery(整容手术), this is not a big step. "
The prospect of designer(定制) babies, like many of the ethnical conundrums(难题) posedby the genetic revolution, is confronting the world so rapidly that doctors, ethicists (伦理学家),religious leaders and politicians are just starting to grapple with(与......进行格斗) the implica-tions and trying to decide how they feel about it all.
They still have a bit of time. Aside from gender, the only traits they can now be identified at the earliest stages of development are about a dozen of the most serious genetic diseases. Genetherapy in embryos(胚胎) is at least a few years away. And the gene or combination of genes re-sponsible for most of our physical and mental attributes has not even been identified yet. Besides, say clinicians, even if the techniques for making designer babies are perfected within the next decade, they should be applied in the service of disease prevention, not improving on nature.
What is gene therapy supposed to do if it lives up to its promise?
A.Screen a baby for sex.
B.Predetermine a baby's sex.
C.Insert genes.
D.Identify genetic disorders.

8、Tiny Invaders
The human body is truly amazing. It allows us to sense the world around us, to do work and have fun, and to move from place to place. In fact, the human body does its work so well that most people don't think about it very much -- until they get sick.
The germs(致病菌)that make people sick are everywhere. You can't see them, but they're there. They're sitting on your desk. They're hiding on your computer's keyboard. They're even in the air that you are breathing. There are two types of germs: viruses and bacteria(细菌).Viruses are germs that can only live inside animals or plants. Viruses cause illnesses such as flu and measles(麻疹).Bacteria are tiny creatures. Some bacteria are good. They can help your stomach break down food. Other bacteria aren't so good. They can-make you sick. Bacteria can cause sore throats(喉痛)and ear infections.
How can you stop these tiny invaders from making you sick? Your skin is the first defense against germs. You can prevent some illnesses simply by washing, with soap and water. But germs can still enter the body through small cuts in the skin or through the mouth, eyes, and nose.
Once germs are inside your body, your immune(免疫的)system tries to protect you. It looks for and destroys germs. How does it do that? Special cells patrol your body. Some of these cells actually eat germs! Other cells make antibodies. An antibody sticks to a germ. There is a different antibody for each kind of germ. Some antibodies keep germs from making you sick. Others help your body find and kill germs. After a germ is destroyed, the antibodies stay in your body. They protect you if the same kind of germ comes back. That way you will not get the same illness twice.
You can keep your body healthy by eating a nutritious(有营养的)diet to make your immune system strong. You can also help your immune system fight germs by getting vaccinated(接种).Vaccines are medicines. They contain germs that have been killed or weakened. The dead germs can't make you sick. Instead, they cause your body to make antibodies. If the same germ ever shows up again, then your antibodies attack it.
Viruses can only live inside people or animals.
